I suspect most journalists have a complicated relationship with industry awards. The recognition from peers means a lot, especially when you are an independent journalist. But it’s also uncomfortable and while some of you might find this hard to believe, self-promotion is hard for me.

But regardless of my qualms, I am truly proud to pass along that I am a finalist in three categories at this year’s L.A. Press Club National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. The categories are “TV Critic (which honestly stunned me), “ Online Journalist of the Year, and the Dave Robb Investigative Reporting Award (which I won in 2024).

The awards are announced at a gala on December 6th. And given that there are five finalists in each category and three winners, there is a not small chance that I could shut out of all three.

Which is fine. Seriously. I’m pleased for the recognition, it’s an honor.

Morgann Book Is Rethinking Romance for the Vertical Video Era

It seems like every day brings news of another couple of new studios that plan to target the microdrama space.

Rommi is a new micromovie studio for the romance community, and one of the things that interested me about the company is for their first rom-com microdrama, they teamed up with Bookish Media. That company is a media and production company founded by Morgann Book and Thomas Johnston, focusing on all things books, including a weekly podcast, Off the Shelf: The Bookish Club. Morgann has a substantial social media presence on TikTok (2.6M), Instagram (144K), and YouTube (1.2M), and is frequently involved in studio publicity for major book adaptations such as Off Campus and My Life with the Walter Boys.

BookTok creators such as Morgann have had a massive impact in the literary world and are an increasingly vital part of any book or book-related promotional campaign.

The micro rom-com Drive Me Mad is based on an original idea by popular romance author Ali Rosen (Unlikely Story), which makes the project an interesting mix of complimentary skillsets. And for those of you in the business, it was a SAG production.

I recently had an opportunity to speak with Morgann about the project, and her wide range of other projects. I really enjoyed the conversation, which I will be posting in full tomorrow.

In the meantime, here is a small excerpt:

❝

You obviously had some ideas about what the experience of filming a microdrama would be like before you started. How closely did reality match your expectations?

Morgann Book: I'd say it was quite close. I've been lucky enough as a creator to visit a bunch of film sets over the last couple of years, usually just for a day or two.

So I understand what it's like to be on set. I know that when they call "Action," you don't move a muscle or speak.

I knew how a set flowed. I also knew that when Maggie and Jamie, the founders of Rommi, reached out to me last year, they were very clear that they were romance fans. They said they understood the landscape of vertical series and the microdrama slate, and they wanted to do something different. They wanted to make something for romance readers.

That was my expectation going in, and that's what we achieved on set. Every decision, from the script development process through production and post-production, came down to this question: How does this benefit romance readers? What do romance readers want?

That was super fun for me because Gen Z, which is my generation, will be consuming this series.

The one thing I didn't realize was how quickly things would move on set. We used many of the same locations for different scenes. We didn't have massive movie budgets, unlimited time, or lots of actors. We had two main actors and a couple of supporting characters.

Everything moves very quickly, so it's helpful when every actor knows their lines, the crew knows what they're doing, and the cameras are set up. Every minute is important, just as it is on other film sets.

I think being a producer on this project really allowed me to feel that.

Rick Ellis: From what little I've seen, it seems like a more traditional approach to romance. Looking at some of your Instagram posts, I remember one where you were watching a movie and crying because it had moved you. So you obviously have a romantic side.

That's different from a lot of the microdramas out there. Many of them claim to be romance, but it's really just, "Here, let me rip my shirt off. Cut. Okay." There's not much romance; it's more sexually oriented. It sounds like you're taking a different approach.

Morgann Book: We really are. Historically, vertical series have relied on sex appeal, massive cliffhangers, or taboo topics. That's okay; those exist for an audience that wants to watch them.

I've watched the occasional vertical series in the past because some stand out for their good actors and scriptwriting. But our goal from the beginning was to do something very different. We wanted to appeal to romance fans.

I think you can still include certain elements found in other vertical series. We have a scene where you see the main character's abs when he comes out of the bathroom and says he doesn't have pajamas. But we approach it in a safe, comfortable, romantic way.

We also use romance tropes: a road-trip romance, forced proximity, a secret identity, and the one-bed trope.

Leveraging those tropes was another way we wanted to do things differently, both in the series itself and in how we marketed it.

We also work closely with authors. Drive Me Mad isn't an adaptation; it's an original concept by romance author Ali Rosen. The idea came from her notes app, which made it really special to develop with her.

I think collaborating with a romance author has so many benefits. They understand romance and know who's going to be consuming the series.

It was incredibly fascinating speaking with Morgann. We’re very different ages and our life experiences couldn’t have less in common. But speaking with her, I was reminded of the things we have in common - the struggles to carve out time for friends and family, to juggle multiple projects and still deliver a coherent message to your fans. I’m interested to see what’s next for her.

The excellence and scale of our entertainment, news and sports businesses, combined with the talent and expertise across our organization, position us well for the road ahead.

While each of us has a distinct role to play, our success will depend on all of us working together at every level, sharing expertise and leveraging the full strength of our portfolio. I’m a firm believer that a collaborative culture generates strong creative and business results.

Today, I’m excited to announce the Skydance TV leadership team. Reporting to me, these accomplished leaders will work together to advance our strategy and help shape the next chapter of our division.

The Studio also produces hits such as SHERIFF COUNTRY and popular streaming series like “Little House on the Prairie” and “Murderbot.” See It Now Studios will operate as a label within CBS Studios.

Matt Thunell oversees Paramount Television Studios, home to premium series for streaming and broadcast, with blockbuster franchises including “Reacher,” its spin-off “Neagley” and the Taylor Sheridan universe that spans DUTTON RANCH, LANDMAN and LIONESS on Paramount+ and MARSHALS on CBS.

Amy Reisenbach leads CBS Entertainment, a cornerstone of our multiplatform strategy and home to the most-watched primetime schedule on television that consistently delivers the biggest new hits year after year – including this season’s Rotten Tomatoes 100% Certified Fresh drama CUPERTINO.

News

Tom Cibrowski will continue to oversee operations across CBS News’ broadcast, streaming and digital businesses, while leaning into his deep experience in morning television to bolster CBS MORNINGS, and sustain the ratings momentum at CBS EVENING NEWS.

Skydance TV

The following leaders will support our broader Skydance TV organization as we bring together and grow our group:

What happens next

I know many of you have questions about our structure and what comes next. We will continue to share more information when possible.

We’re still early in this journey and process, but I’m confident in the strength of this team and in the extraordinary talent and capabilities across our business. As I’ve said, the work ahead is significant, and so is the opportunity. Together, we’ll build on our strengths and shape an even stronger future.

Thank you for everything you do.
More to come.

Tweet Of The Day

Kasey Moore from Whats-On-Netflix.com is reporting that former subscribers from Netflix are complaining about receiving multiple waves of emails from the service. Netflix has yet to offer up a comment, but they appear to be the emails that a current subscriber would receive when they ask to be reminded when a title premieres on the service.

Odds & Sods

  • The documentary The Slightest Touch premieres on Wednesday, November 25th on HBO. Here is a first look at the trailer. And here is the official logline: “Emma Fogarty has spent her life defying expectations. Born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), an extremely rare and devastating condition that causes her skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch, Emma refuses to be defined by her disease. Instead, she has built a life marked by resilience, purpose, and an unwavering determination to live on her own terms. As she turns 40, an age doctors once believed she would never reach, Emma and her longtime friend Colin Farrell embark on the challenge of completing the Dublin Marathon together. After running the full marathon himself, Colin joins Emma for the final four kilometers, pushing her wheelchair one kilometer for each decade that she has lived with EB.”

  • Disney has renewed its teen supernatural drama series Coven Academy for a second season. The second season will be a continuation of the first season, which stars Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she’s a witch.

  • The three-part docudrama Billy Bob Thornton Presents: The Mayflower, premieres Monday, November 23rd on Fox Nation. Here is a first look at the trailer, which includes an impressive amount of AI-created footage.

  • If there’s a Wikipedia page about yourself, you must be famous—some kind of celebrity—or an expert in your field, or a figure who’s made a prominent contribution to human history or culture. But what happens when that page is nominated by Wikipedia editors for deletion? I don’t have a Wikipedia page, but I do think I have enough experiences, book and media mentions, to make it at least an option. But so far, no one voluntering at Wikipedia has seen the need for it.

  • VH1’s America’s Funniest People, hosted by comedian Patricia "Ms. Pat" Williams-Lee, will premiere on Monday, November 16th.

  • Pride And Prejudice, based on the book by Jane Austen, premieres Thursday, December 3rd on Netflix.

  • Following the passing of iconic civil rights and labor activist Dolores Huerta today, I wanted to share that the Peabody Award-winning documentary Dolores, which captures her trailblazing leadership and lifelong advocacy, is available to stream on PBS Documentaries on Prime Video and PBS Passport.

  • Meghan Markle will co-host a new season of Junior MasterChef Australia on Network 10 next year alongside Poh Ling Yeow. Her guest-judging stint on MasterChef Australia in April drew the show’s biggest Sunday audience since 2023.

  • The two-hour special Alan Jackson: The Last Show will premiere Tuesday, December 8th on NBC.

  • CNN, Politico and MS NOW have filed an amended lawsuit against Donald Trump, this time challenging the White House’s continued exclusion of the outlets from Air Force One and the Oval Office even though other reporters have been allowed for their news coverage.

  • Friday’s Nightline has a Halloween theme with an episode entitled “Frightline In Salem. Here’s the official logline: “On the eve of Halloween, “Nightline” travels to Salem, Massachusetts, to meet with modern-day witches, descendants of accused witches from the infamous Salem witch trials, and the growing community of self-described vampires.”

Some Penske Publications Have An Ads Spam Problem

A couple of weeks ago, I started getting messages like this after I had been on Deadline for a minute or two. At first, I thought it was on my end, but after checking my computer for a virus and noticing the problem on multiple computers, I asked on social media if anyone was having a similar issue.

I heard from multiple people that they had been experiencing similar problems, and they reported it also happened on other Penske Media-owned Hollywood trades. So my guest is that the problem is that the programmatic ad service PMC is using on its outlets has a spam problem and it that means the warnings and spam randomly pops up when the ad loads.

I reached out to PMC for a comment, but haven’t heard back anything.
