I have a tendency to cycle through Pay TV services, in large part so that I can report on the user experience for my readers.

I recently signed up for YouTube Live TV, which was a lot more frustrating an experience than it should have been.

I wanted to take advantage of a promo deal that offered 21 free days, and then a $20 per month discount for three months.

The problem is that YouTube TV is tied directly into your Google profile. You can’t sign up without first signing into Google. And when I signed up via my primary [email protected] profile, it didn’t offer me the deal.

So I had to completely sign out of Google, then sign back in with another Gmail address, go through the entire sign-up process again until I got to the checkout page, where I would find out whether or not I could get the deal.

I had to cycle through three different Google accounts to find one that would work. And I just discovered that I can’t create additional profiles for other members of my family, because apparently profile sharing doesn’t work with accounts set up through Google Workspace (ie, a domain email that is routed through Gmail).

It’s just an incredibly frustrating experience and honestly, if I wasn’t subscribing for work purposes, I would have canceled it after the 21-day free trial. And likely will anyway and decide if I want to try and find a Gmail account that will allow the discount as well as the ability to create profiles.

Netflix Triples Down On Video Podcasts And Content Creators

The flipside of the Netflix second season ratings drop story is that it reflects in part an engagement problem across the SVOD industry. There are a lot of viewing options available, and from talking to people of Netflix, one of their operating theories on why that viewing slump is happening is that it’s in part a reflection of the disaggregation that is happening across the industry in general.

Which is one of the reasons why you are seeing a huge flurry of new deals over the past week or so with high-profile video podcasters, YouTube channels and other creators.

Here is just some of the highlights of the deals that have been recently announced at Netflix:

  • Wishbone Kitchen, a new weekly video podcast from Meredith Hayden, is coming to Netflix in August. Here is the brief official logline: “Pull up a kitchen stool and press play. Each week, Meredith Hayden — the face and name behind Wishbone Kitchen — cooks, chats and talks through cozy, crave-worthy recipes, real kitchen tips, and the small rituals that turn a house into a home. It's the kind of podcast that makes you want to light a candle, pour a glass of wine, and press record on your own kitchen story.”

  • Alex and Alan Stokes, better known to their over 160 million subscribers as the Stokes Twins, are bringing their massive library and storytelling to Netflix beginning on Saturday, July 18th. Here is the official logline: “The identical twins are known for turning complex challenges, high-energy adventures, and playful comedy into must-watch videos. From busting myths and surviving the “World’s Strictest School” to building elaborate secret rooms in their house and high-stake games of hide and seek, they’ve built a global audience across Instagram and TikTok, tallying nearly 100 billion views and more than a quarter-billion followers across all social platforms — and it’s all powered by their bond as brothers.”

  • Netflix recently announced partnerships with leading digital publishers to bring fan-favorite videos to members in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand beginning August 3rd.

Content from partners in this first wave will include popular series and videos from brands such as:

    • BuzzFeed Studios: A*Pop, BuzzFeed Celeb, Cocoa Butter, Pero Like, Tasty

    • Condé Nast: Allure, Architectural Digest (AD), Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, Epicurious, Glamour, House & Garden, Self, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Wired, World of Interiors

    • Hearst Magazines: Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Seventeen, Women’s Health, Town & Country, Delish, Good Housekeeping

    • PMX, a subdivision of Penske Media: Billboard, Eater, Indiewire, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety

    • People Inc.: Entertainment Weekly, Food & Wine, InStyle, PEOPLE, Travel + Leisure

    • Tastemade: Tastemade

  • While it may seem like the video talk show series Hot Ones is on just about every platform, Netflix has signed a deal for the exclusive series Hot Ones: Extra Heat, which will premiere July 13th. Here is the official logline: “Hosted by Sean Evans, each 30-minute special brings the signature 10-wing challenge and deeply researched conversations to unique on-location settings inspired by major tentpole moments on Netflix—from live sporting events to film and series launches. Along the way, Sean and his guests take part in exclusive segments tailored to each destination, with surprise appearances adding even more heat. Designed as an extension of the ongoing YouTube series, Hot Ones: Extra Heat brings the show's unmistakable blend of spice and substance directly into the must-watch events everyone will already be talking about.”

  • Netflix is partnering with Spotify for a new season of the podcast On Purpose With Jay Shetty. The new season premieres on July 13th and here is the official logline: “On Purpose with Jay Shetty is one of the world's most successful podcasts, featuring thought-provoking conversations with the most influential voices across entertainment, culture, wellness, sports, and business. Through candid, never-before-heard conversations and practical insights, Jay explores the relationships, challenges, experiences, and perspectives that shape our lives - creating space for both guests and listeners to feel seen, heard, and understood.”

Netflix has also been licensing seasons of shows food programs that previously aired on another streaming service. Such as Emeril Cooks, which was originally produced for the Roku Channel.

One thing I don’t know is whether this strategy is limited to more mature markets such as North America. Or whether Netflix will eventually begin signing deals with podcasters and content creators in other parts of the globe.

  • The five-part Nova series Evolution premieres Wednesday, October 14th on PBS. Here is the official logline: “Evolution is an epic tale revealing the twists and turns of our existence over billions of years. Sterling Point also stars Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, Night Swim), Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie (Billie Blue), Daniel Quinn-Toye (Sunny Dancer) Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell, The Radleys), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead), Nikko Angelo Hinayo (Davey & Jonesie's Locker), Mabel Strachan (The Ridge), Elle-Maija Tailfeathers (Three Pines), and Missi Pyle (Harlan Coben’s Shelter).”

  • The true crime documentary My Grandfather Charles Manson premieres Wednesday, July 22nd on Hulu. Here is a first look at the trailer and here is the official logline: “Sophia was always the good girl growing up and her father's rock, but her quest to identify her unknown grandfather results in a shocking discovery: He is Charles Manson, history's most notorious criminal; and he bears striking physical similarities to her beloved father. Sophia’' discovery propels her into an underworld of Manson family members and unreliable narrators as she traces her grandfather's life. Along the way, her genetics unlock never-before-released records and exclusive audio recordings that illuminate Manson's pathology in startling ways. But the more Sophia uncovers, the more her relationship with her father is strained. For Sophia, there’s no turning back. What has she inherited, and how will she reckon with her family legacy?”

  • Season two of MobLand premieres Friday, September 18th on Paramount+. Here is the official logline: “The ten-episode second season will see the Harrigans struggle to show a unified front as rising rivals threaten their fractured criminal empire – and Harry Da Souza, their street-smart and formidable ‘fixer’, must walk a dangerous tightrope when tensions within the family intensify. As violence spills into every corner of their lives, loyalties snap, safety proves temporary, and the battle for power leaves no room for mercy.”

  • Bloody Murray premieres Sunday, July 19th on ChaiFlicks. Here is the official logline: “Murray is a film lecturer specializing in romantic comedies, and Dana is a gynecologist at a hospital. Their friendship is tested when Dana falls for the man Murray ditched in a hit-and-run accident (which was Murray’s fault), who then shows up at their doorstep to give Murray a piece of his mind and return a lost piece of luggage. Murray, who is struggling with feelings of loneliness and regret, realizes she has feelings for him, too. Despite their turbulent first interaction (the hit and run) Murray convinces herself that he is actually meant for her – after all, this is how all classic romantic comedies begin…isn’t it?”

Here is the official logline: “In Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, the couples reunite in celebration as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Inside The Turmoil At CNN

New York Magazine’s Tim Kludt has an in-depth look at CNN and how employees there are dealing with the prospect of the network being overseen by Bari Weiss:

Multiple CNN employees told me they see similarities between Weiss and Chris Licht, Thompson’s predecessor whose stormy 13-month tenure at CNN ended in 2023. Much like Weiss at CBS, Licht seemed intent on making the network’s coverage more palatable to Republicans. He pushed CNN to book more conservative guests, while instructing staff to stop describing Trump’s election denialism as "the big lie." His programming decisions were a flop, most notably an ill-conceived morning show and a Trump town hall that turned into a MAGA rally.

And Licht alienated some veteran journalists at CNN with criticism of the network's approach, while also appearing distant from the rank and file — not unlike Weiss at CBS. "People remember what happened to Chris Licht and they think, Oh, she’s toast at CBS and there’s no way she’ll get the keys now because she’s become such a problem," said one CNN staffer. "The more anxious types in here are just like, No, the world is crumbling. There’s no reason that David Ellison wouldn’t do the stupidest thing possible and give Bari Weiss the keys to CNN."

I have joked that Weiss might come in and give conservative Scott Jennings a primetime show. But that joke is feeling more like a real possibility these days.

The problem with CNN’s attempts to move to the Right is that there isn’t an audience there to capture. Fox News has a lock on the MAGA audience, with several smaller outlets like NewsMax targeting the very right audience.

So aside from the political aspects of wanting to please Donald Trump, moving CNN more to the right is a terrible business decision.
